Watery eyes, stuffy nose, and sneezing may be the reason behind cold or sinus infection. If confused about the real cause of your congestion, the symptoms can help you get the clue.

Cold

Sore throat, cough, headache, stuffy nose, mucus build up, sneezing, fatigue, swollen sinuses, and fever are few symptoms of cold. It usually lasts for 10 days or less.

Cold is a virus, thus cannot treated by antibiotics. Over the counter medications as prescribed by doctors of walk in clinic are helpful to get rid of cold.

Sinus infection

Sinus infection is inflammation or swelling in nose. With increase bacteria of sinus, this infection can also lead to sinusitis.

People suffering from sinus will face following symptoms like     foul-smelling nasal discharge, pain around the face and eyes, headache, nasal obstruction, congestion, post-nasal drip and fever/cough etc.

Sinus problem is detected late because of the symptoms that are usually similar to that of cold symptoms. These can only detected is the problem lasts for more than 10 days.

This infection can diagnose with physical exam and medical history evaluation. Sometimes urgent care doctors also suggest patients to go for X-rays or CT scan, if initial treatment does not respond.

Based on the results of medical examination, medications are provided accordingly. Doctors to help decrease swelling in the nasal passages prescribe antibiotics, decongestants, and other drugs.

Besides antibiotics, steam and hot showers are recommended to loosen mucus and then wash mucus from nose.

If sinusitis not treated with regular antibiotics, long-term antibiotics, or surgery is advice to patients.

Therefore, if you are suffering from either of the condition cold or sinus, you must visit a doctor. Usually, cold is treatable with or without medical treatment within a week or so, but if you find pain around your face or eyes, along with thick yellow nasal discharge for more than a week, seek medical treatment from health care provider.

In case, with these medical issues, if you get fever also, then immediately go for treatment, as over-the-counter treatments cannot help you get rid of such health issue.

Routine sinus conditions are treatable by primary care doctor. But in case of severe problem, patient is advised to see specialist of nose.
Therefore, before fixing you appointment with the doctor make sure he is specialist in this field.
